Research Interests

Although most antimicrobials possess the capacity to target a variety of microbes, each of these may not only eliminate pathogens, but also often induce the removal of important normal flora. This can result in significant dysbiosis and increase the probability of antimicrobial resistance across diverse microbial species.  Our lab studies a group of unique host antimicrobial proteins that possess the ability to specifically and intrinsically target individual microbes.  However, the mechanism whereby these host factors kill microbes remains unknown.  We are actively exploring the antimicrobial mechanisms of these innate immune factors in an effort to develop novel antimicrobial that specifically target pathogenic organisms.
