Research Interests

The role of RND-type efflux systems in resistance to third generation cephalosporins is being investigated by systematically deleting each of the 10 predicted RND-type systems alone and in various combinations. We are also investigating a novel mechanism for b-lactam resistance that results from loss of the BfmS sensor kinase.

In a second project, the role of a quorum sensing mediated phase variation is being studied. This phase variation results in the interconversion between two colony types, termed opaque and translucent. The levels of resistance to cationic antibiotics are altered between these colony variations and the differences responsible for are under investigation
